Indian fashion is taking over America! Okay, we may be exaggerating, but not by much. I was surprised the other day while watching a Firefly DVD. One of the main characters is wearing a sari, sometimes a kurta, and sometimes a lehnga! Indian fashion goes mainstream FOX TV. Turn on Fit TV and the fitness gurus are touting Indian fashion yoga wear. Every third commercial has the twangs of the Indian sitar and the actors in Indian fashion outfits or jewelry. The big screen is obviously not immune to the Indian fashion invasion either. Watch the movie Serenity and you will see for yourself.
Indian fashion didn’t make it big in the West with a coincidence. The trend has shifted away from tight and tiny to the elegant and flowing “bohemian clothing” as of late, also known as ethnic clothing. In truth, most of these outfits are Indian clothing and Pakistani clothing. Part of this shift is just due to a reactionary phase against the Britney fashion that was dominant for 5 years. The other reason is just practical. Let’s face it. The average American woman is getting larger and more practical fashion is needed. Indian fashion provides the elegance and grace while being trendy and cool. The recent surge in all things Indian fashion was hailed in a TIME magazine piece by a journalist. He praised the designer tunic tops in their versatility, trendiness, and comfort. Indian clothes were also praised for their ideal suiting for beach, casual, evening, and party wear.
The clothing of Indian fashion includes several nice outfits. Number one is the tunic top, also known as the kurta. This is essentially a nice loose shirt embroidered with sequin tops, crystals, and beads. A good one can be had for $30 to $90. The other important suit is the indian salwar kameez, or shalwar kameez. This is a three piece suit that includes a long shirt, loose pants, and a stole, known as a dupatta. Also, there is the lehnga choli which is the equivalent of a skirt blouse, but often adorned with heavy embroidery for evening affairs.
